Tweedle-dum & Tweedle-dee – Handel vs Bononcini
Step into the coffee houses and concert halls of 1720s London where fashionable society argued passionately over two rival composers: Giovanni Bononcini and George Frideric Handel, inspiring the epigram that gave rise to the phrase ‘Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee’.
“Some say, compar’d to Bononcini
That Mynheer Handel’s but a Ninny
Others aver, that he to Handel
Is scarcely fit to hold a Candle
Strange all this Difference should be
‘Twixt Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!”
(John Byrom, 1725)
Hear the music that captivated London and judge for yourself, in an afternoon of vocal and instrumental works by these two masters.
