Join all-singing, all-dancing (and all-clowning!) biology teachers Oesoph A. Gus and Dewey Dean as they explore the ins and outs of the human digestive system in their award-winning show, You Are a Doughnut.

Just as the title of the show says, YOU are a doughnut — with a scientifically magnificent hole running straight through our middles — from our mouth to, well… grand finale!

Produced by That Science Gang, who created the award-winning The Alphabet of Awesome Science, this new show explores the many twists, turns and intestinal intricacies of the human digestive system — with sketches, songs and sensational science demonstrations.

You Are a Doughnut has won a couple of Adelaide Fringe Festival Awards — the 2023 “Science at the Fringe” Award as well as a 2022 Weekly Award for “Best Kids and Family”.

Stepping into the roles of Oesoph and Dewey are vastly experienced comedic performers Rod Schultz and PJ Oaten — with Schultz’s performances including a variety of character roles with State Opera SA, and Oaten’s many credits including the role of Barnaby the Bizzy Buzzy Bee in The Fairies.

Music for the show has been composed by Mark Simeon Ferguson, who has written a host of songs for the SA public Primary Schools Music Festival and whose orchestral works have been performed by a number of Australia’s major orchestras.

You Are a Doughnut is inspired by ‘variety show’ traditions of yesteryear, as well as contemporary variety-style programs such as Australia’s Got Talent. With a rainbow collection of ‘poop’ puppets, enzyme-powered ping balls and a poetry reading that has to be seen to be believed! Plus, there’s a very explosive, very farty finale — because, of course!

It all adds up to the weirdest, most accidentally educational variety-hour/biology-lesson that you’re ever likely to experience.

‘…every second of the show is action packed and kids & adults alike were thoroughly entertained. ‘This high-energy show
is a biology lesson with fact after fact…a well crafted, well researched and well executed show”

CAST: P J Oaten and Rod Schultz

With a career in TV, film, theatre and live performance spanning more than 30 years, PJ Oaten is equally thrilled to be on stage performing for an audience of 60,000 as he is to be putting on a show for one sick child in hospital.

PJ’s performance experience includes work at the Melbourne Comedy festival, with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, as well as TV guest roles on Neighbours and in countless commercials.

PJ’s favourite roles have included presenting for Fox Sports Australia, working with Daniel Radcliffe on the film Escape from Pretoria and
playing popular comedic character Barnaby the Bizzy Buzzy Bee on the international Children’s Television series The Fairies.

Writing has formed a large component of PJ’s body of work — with comedy, drama and music all amongst his credits.

Voiceover work is also a key part of his career. PJ has provided vocals for 6 studio children’s albums, as well as voice characterisations for award winning animated films. PJ has received four ARIA Award Nominations.
